Water Heater Maintenance Tips

You can reduce the need for water heater repairs and replacements later on by keeping up with basic water heater maintenance. Here are just a few things you can do:
  • Clean the tank regularly. You should flush and drain your tank annually in order to prevent build-up of mineral deposits and corrosion from hard water. Corrosion lowers the quality of your drinking water and deposits decrease the efficiency of your tank.
  • If your tank has an anode rod, a metal rod that draws in corrosive elements, preventing the tank from corroding –check the tank while flushing it, and make sure the rod isn’t completely corroded. You’ll need to replace it with a new one to continue protecting your tank if it is.
We will also help you with your basic water heater maintenance. Scheduling an annual appointment with a technician is a great way to prevent future problems and save a lot of money doing so. You can trust us to recommend the best preventive water heater maintenance or repairs without selling you unnecessary services or upgrades.

Common Water Heater Repair Issues

Below are some common problems that people mostly notice with their water heaters. Many of these mean that you’ll need some water heater repair work:
  • The pilot light won’t stay lit or is completely out
  • There are leaks coming from attachments like copper valves or tubing
  • The top or sides of the water heater are leaking
  • You hear a banging sound coming from the pipes or excessive noise coming from the water heater
  • You can smell gas
Immediately turn off the gas shutoff valve, air out the room, and call for help if the smell of gas is apparent. It’s also important to treat water leaks immediately, before they cause damage and create a mess. Loud noises coming from your pipes or water heater doesn’t usually indicate urgent problems, but they can be annoying, and the sounds can indicate corrosion buildup, so having them checked at some point is a good idea. Here are a couple of other common problems that may mean that rather than replacing your current water heater, you may need to install a new one:
  • The tank is leaking
  • Issues with sediment in your water or corrosion
  • Hot water doesn’t feel as hot as it used to be, or runs out more quickly than it used to
Many of these issues stem back to the tank itself failing and wearing out. We usually recommend replacing your tank if it’s several years old. That being said, we know that it can be difficult to tell whether a water heater replacement or repair is necessary. We can send a technician out to take a look at your water heater, get to the cause of the problem, and offer you the best solution.
